Major Tree Planting Project Launched

This spring, The Arboretum received a generous grant from Lex Grow Trees, setting in motion one of our largest tree planting efforts in decades. With this support, The Arboretum will plant at least 250 new trees, including over 100 wild-collected native species from Kentucky, helping to preserve the genetic diversity of our region’s flora. In addition, 100-plus native trees and shrubs will be propagated for planting in Lexington’s public spaces or distributed to the community.

The grant also funds student internships, giving future environmental professionals valuable hands-on experience in tree care while helping to maintain both new and existing trees.

This project also includes installation of 350 new plant labels, enabling visitors to learn about the trees and shrubs on display. During Tree Week, The Arboretum will host a Community Tree Event, Gardening with Trees, on Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m., offering free native trees, t-shirts, tree walks and kids' activities.

Thanks to the Lex Grow Trees grant, The Arboretum is not only growing trees, but also knowledge, stewardship and a stronger connection between people and the natural world.
